The Children
The children, come to us from the KIND program.
KIND (Kids In New Directions) is a faith-based community outreach
program sponsored by Memorial United Church of Christ that serves
the inner-city children of East Dayton. These are underprivileged
children, many of whom come from broken families.
In the KIND program they learn to live what most
of us see as a "normal" life. This program ensures they have adequate
food, clothing and shelter. We give them a party for Christmas,
and a chance to simply have fun. We do this in the true Masonic
spirit of Brotherly love - The Lodge does not pay for the gifts;
each Brother pays for the gift or gifts he may bring.
How it Started
When he was Worshipful Master, RWB Walt Barner
initiated this event in Dayton Lodge in 2002. As a
first time event, no one was quite certain how it would work, or
if something like this was indeed worthwhile. At the end of the
first party there was no doubt in anyone's mind that we had done
a wonderful thing, and the line officers agreed that as they came
to the East, they would continue to give these children a Christmas
party.
